RESIDENTIAL DESIGN
Contemporary Residence
By Lucina Ortiz
This contemporary residence was designed for a single woman in her forties with a very busy workday as a lawyer who just moved to La Jolla, California from New York City. She is a gourmet cook and entertains from 8 to 10 people at a time. Her mother comes and visits her every so often and spends the night. She works out of her home and the weekends and needed a home office. She is used to loft living in NYC and prefers openness as much as possible. Her mother is 82 and needed a guest house for most of the year and accommodations to her needs as an aging adult were met in this project. She is also a fine art enthusiast and loves to take inspiration from it. Her design taste tends towards the very contemporary cutting edge style, but also enjoys a modernist feel. Andy Warhol is one of her many inspirations in creating this contemporary space. The client purchased this space for various reasons, including the fantastic view of the La Jolla beaches out of the west facing primary windows, and the openness of the high ceilings. The patio and the exterior which are elements that are very connected to the interior of the home, were also main reasons why this home was perfect for the client.
