The Art Institute Graphic Design Building
By Lucina Ortiz
The concept of the design for the Graphic Design Building for The Art Institute of CaliforniaSan Diego will address different design challenges for a functional design school that prepares creative professionals. The building has to be suitable for various activities that encourage learning in a creative environment. Technology is the main element in designing an appropriate facility for graphic design students. Color, shapes, and imagery that spark a designers imagination will be part of the design solution. Fitting furniture and spaces will fill the building in order for students to achieve the maximum learning capacity. Spaces such as photography studios, and updated computer labs will enable growth as designers to become prepared for their future careers. Adjacencies and proximities will be considered for proper workflow. Graphic design students are visual, dynamic and diverse, therefore, the spaces in which they become prepared for their futures should mirror their personalities, goals and ambitions.

When I interviewed various graphic design students, I asked them about their favorite colors, type faces, and their favorite artists. Many of them responded positively to Si Scott, a famous graphic designer who draws mainly organic shapes. I designed a fixture for the coffee shop that resembled his work out of architectural resin.
